Men's Hair Transplants
FUE and FUT hair transplants carried out in CQC registered UK clinics, with an honest assessment of whether surgery is right for you and a written guarantee with every treatment.
How it works
Men's hair transplants explained
Men's hair transplants work by moving hair you already have. The follicles at the back and sides of your head are naturally resistant to DHT, the hormone behind male pattern baldness, so when they are moved into a thinning area they carry on growing exactly as they did before.
Every procedure starts with a free assessment. We measure your donor density, map how your loss is likely to progress, and tell you plainly whether surgery will give you the result you want. Only around 40% of the men we see are suitable, and we will always say so if you are not.
Both of the techniques we offer, FUE and FUT, use that same donor principle. The difference is in how the follicles are taken from the donor area, and that choice affects how many grafts you can have in one sitting, what it costs, and the kind of mark left behind.

The two techniques
Types of men's hair transplants
There are two categories that men's hair transplants fall into. Both are highly effective, but they use different techniques to extract the DHT resistant follicles from the donor area, which covers the back and sides of the head. Taking follicles from the donor site is commonly known as harvesting, and it can be carried out in two ways, either FUT or FUE.
FUT (Strip)
The FUT hair transplant procedure, also known as strip, is more suitable for those who have more extensive hair loss, as up to 3,000 grafts can be transplanted at one time depending on the patient's density and scalp elasticity. With this procedure a very thin, linear scar is left across the scalp in the donor area, which can be hidden by longer hair at grade 2 or above.
FUE
FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction, and refers to the technique where a small round punch is used to extract units of hair follicles one by one from an area of dense hair growth, and transplant them into an area of baldness. Each follicular unit contains one to four hairs. FUE is best used on patients who are looking to have just one or two small areas covered.
Choosing between them
Is FUT or FUE better for me?
As a rule, patients who require large scale implantation in one sitting must elect for FUT. This is because there is confidence in the FUT extraction technique that a yield of between 2,500 and 3,000 grafts will be possible in a single sitting. Yields of over 3,000 follicles are not unheard of if scalp elasticity is high, as the availability of excess scalp tissue is the determining factor in FUT yield. Conversely, a patient with a tight scalp may only achieve a yield of up to 2,200 follicles, so scalp elasticity is always checked at your consultation before this procedure is recommended.
If it is determined that you are suitable for the other technique, you should be aware that FUE extraction takes longer, to ensure integrity and optimise successful growth. The follicles are extracted one by one and are picked based on how healthy they look. As we are taking from the back, we have to ensure each graft we take has at least five or six grafts left surrounding it, otherwise that area can start to thin. This is why fewer grafts can be taken with FUE in one sitting. The FUE option is viable for patients who require generally no more than 2,200 to 3,000 grafts, and cases towards the end of that scale may require two separate treatments six months apart.
Patients should exercise extreme caution when dealing with clinics who promise to extract and implant above 3,000 follicles in one treatment, whether the proposed treatment is FUE or FUT. With FUT there is no guarantee the strip density will provide over 3,000, and with FUE a graft count that high risks over-harvesting, which leaves the donor area looking thin and depleted.
Men's hair transplants at a glance
The typical success rates in hair transplants are 92% for FUE and 97% for FUT. This is mainly due to the time the grafts are out of the body, which is slightly longer with FUE. However, because with FUE we can pick the follicles producing more hairs, visually there is little aesthetic difference in the long run.
During the consultation we will look at your family history of hair loss. If your family has a lot of Norwood 6 or 7, then we are more likely to recommend FUT, which can achieve 6,000 grafts over two treatments compared with around 4,000 for FUE.
Most hair transplants cost between £3,000 and £7,000, set by the number of grafts you need. Because FUE is individual extraction it requires more skill and takes much longer, so the cost is higher. The difference from FUT to FUE can range from £600 to £1,500 depending on the size of the case. Costs for both procedures can be spread over monthly instalments starting from £70 a month.
FUE typically takes slightly longer than FUT, even though fewer grafts can be placed in one treatment. This is because we take the follicles one by one, whereas with FUT we take all the grafts at once. FUE takes roughly 8 hours for a full 2,200 grafts, whereas FUT takes around 6 hours for up to 3,000.

FAQs
Men's hair transplant questions
Is a hair transplant permanent?
Transplanted hair behaves like the hair it came from, so for most people it lasts a lifetime, or well into old age when the procedure is done correctly. We are redistributing permanent hair rather than creating new follicles, so if the donor area thins in later life the transplanted hair can thin with it.
Will it leave a scar?
FUT leaves a very fine linear scar in the donor area that is hidden by hair at grade 2 or longer, and trichophytic closure makes it very difficult to detect. FUE leaves tiny dot marks rather than a line. We would not recommend shaving the back of the head very closely, because healing varies from person to person.
How many grafts will I need?
It depends on the area being covered and your donor density. Small hairline work can start at around 1,000 grafts, while a full front and mid scalp restoration may need 2,500 to 3,000. You get an exact number and price at your consultation.
Am I too young for a hair transplant?
Age matters less than pattern. If your loss is still progressing quickly, transplanting too early can leave gaps as the surrounding hair recedes. We often recommend stabilising things with non-surgical treatment first and revisiting surgery later.
What happens on the day?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic and takes most of the day. You are awake throughout, you can eat and drink, and you go home the same day with a written aftercare plan and direct contact details for your coordinator.
How long until I see the result?
Transplanted hairs shed within the first few weeks, which is completely normal. New growth begins at around three to four months, and the final result is usually judged at around twelve months.
Can I have a second procedure later?
Yes. Many patients have a second treatment, either to increase density or to address further loss. With FUT we can achieve around 6,000 grafts over two treatments, and we plan your donor area with that possibility in mind from the start.
Do you offer finance?
Yes. Costs for both procedures can be spread over monthly instalments, starting from £70 a month, and every quote comes with a price match guarantee.

Free Retreat Or Your Money Back
It is easy to make bold statements of success and much harder to stand behind them in a fast growing and heavily advertised market. We deal with real problems and appropriate solutions every day, and we have never been afraid of backing up what we claim. We only accept patients we know we can help, and we set expectations we know can be met, which is what allows us to offer a guarantee at all. If we are unable to achieve the treatment plan and the realistic result that goes with it, we will welcome you back and treat you again at no extra cost. That happens rarely. In the event that we cannot retreat you for medical reasons, you receive an appropriate refund instead.
All Surgical Facilities Are Registered With The Government's CQC (Care Quality Commission)
Our facilities are a blend of clinical technology and considered design. Our treatment and surgery rooms are designed to combine the latest in science and aesthetics. Our surgery rooms are fully equipped to handle a full day of Microscopic Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation or Follicular Unit Extraction surgery, one patient per room. Each surgery room is adjunct to a row of five to six high definition, optimal resolution microscope stations where technicians cut and sliver a patient's donor strip. No matter which facility you choose for your treatment, our attentive staff and relaxed, contemporary setting helps put patients at ease from the minute they have their hair loss assessment to the moment the surgery is complete.
Surgeons Who Only Do Hair Restoration
The physicians at UK Hair perform just one procedure: hair transplantation. They work one-on-one with patients throughout the process and typically prefer to schedule only one procedure a day to give each patient the attention and care they deserve.
Written Guarantee With Your Treatment
We advise over 6,000 patients every year. Hair loss and its correction is all we do, which is why we are willing to put our guarantee in writing rather than leave it as something said in a consultation room. Every surgical procedure we carry out comes with a written guarantee that sets out what we have agreed to achieve, and exactly what happens if we do not achieve it.
We Would Rather Say No Than Get It Wrong
We stand by our guarantee, but we take no pleasure in retreating patients, because for most people that is an added inconvenience they could do without. We do everything we can to avoid it being necessary, and that starts at the assessment. Only around 40% of the people we assess turn out to be suitable for a hair transplant, and we will say so when surgery is not the right answer. Years of experience mean we can usually spot a potential problem at consultation, and where we do, we say so.
