Hair loss is a reality for thousands of people in the U.K. It can have a huge impact on someone’s confidence and self-esteem. Thankfully, there are lots of different hair loss solutions available – whether you are looking for a permanent or temporary solution, there’s something out there for you.
One of the solutions we offer at UK Hair Transplant Clinics is Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP). This is essentially small tattoos that replicate the appearance of real hair follicles. The pigment is inserted with a micro needle within the dermal layer of the skin. These tiny pockets which help to imitate the appearance of individual follicles. Scalp micropigmentation can be very flexible and can be tailored to each individual person.
A client will be able to choose the:
- Shape of the hairline.
- The colour of the pigment.
- Placement of the pigment.
This makes it a great solution for those that want total control over the shape of their hairline or want a clean, defined look.

Scalp Micro Pigmentation Aftercare
Scalp micropigmentation is a semi-permanent solution to hair loss and only requires a small touch-up every 3-4 years in some cases as the pigment does fade over time. There will be a detailed consultation prior to the treatment which allows you to discuss your needs and decide if micropigmentation is the right option for you, if it is you can then design the whole look you want from front to back. Treatments can usually need 2 or 3 sessions which take around 4 hours, and there is no recovery period. This means you can return to your regular life quickly however we wouldn’t recommend going straight on holiday as the sun could damage new pigment in the first week. SMP is also a great solution for those that want to cover scars, alopecia or blemishes on the scalp.
SMP will only benefit those with very little or no hair at all growing on their scalp (Norwood 6 or 7) as they are very likely to be unsuitable for a hair transplant. The micro pigments will not mimic long strands of hair, nor will it help your hair to grow. It merely mimics hair follicles, to look like a freshly shaven head.
If you are interested in having scalp micropigmentation carried out then we would advise that you attend one of our free consultations. This will allow us to assess whether you are a suitable candidate.
Success Rate
100% as you design the shape and we can do as many sessions as it takes to get the look you desire. It normally only takes 3 maximum but if you need to tweak the shape slightly or want the colour a little bit darker we can do an extra session easily.
Genetics
If you are prone to oily skin it can mean the pigment fades quicker than that of someone with a normal/combination skin type. The treatment is still great to give coverage in areas of concern but it may mean you will need top-ups more regularly.
Cost
SMP is a much cheaper alternative to a hair transplant but it isn’t permanent so top-ups are required. Prices range depending on the size of the area you want covering starting from £1,500 to £2,900. When a top-up is required it is £500 every 3-4 years.
Treatment Time
You will start with a 30-minute consultation to design the treatment areas then each session roughly takes 3 to 4 hours. You will be sent a patch test to do at home prior to the day but if you aren’t able to complete this one can be done 1 hour before treatment.
What Are The Benefits Of The SMP
Is it permanent?
No, scalp micro-pigmentation is semi-permanent. It lasts roughly 3-4 years after that you will require a top-up treatment. If you decide you no longer want the pigment then you just let it fade out and it eventually disappears.
Is it painful?
No, it doesn’t require any form of numbing cream or anaesthetic. We do recommend taking some mild painkillers an hour before treatment if you feel you might need it. If you have had any tattoos previously the pain is less than a normal tattoo.
What is the aftercare?
There is limited aftercare for SMP. The only thing to note is you can’t wash your hair for 4 days after treatment so bare this in mind when arranging a date. We also recommend avoiding going on holiday in the first week as the sun can damage the pigment if it hasn’t settled yet.
What should I expect on the day?
It starts with a consultation where you design the area for treatment. Then you start your 3-4 hour treatment. Films will be available to watch if you would like or you can bring your own entertainment i.e. a book, laptop or iPad. After treatment the area will be red so we recommend bringing a cap with you for travelling home. You can drive home after treatment as you are not given any medications that contradict with driving.
Pricing And Finance Options
We know the cost of a hair transplant can be daunting. We offer regular promotions to customers that have been for consultations, you just have to attend one to be in the with a chance of hearing about them.
Another way to pay is to pay in monthly instalments; you can spread the cost over 12 to 60 months. The payments range from £50 to £200 per month, depending on the amount you want to pay and how quickly you want the agreement to finish. If you chose this option after your consultation one of our advisors will talk you through the steps and help you pick the plan best for you.
