FUE Hair Transplant.
FUE (Follicular unit extraction) is one of the methods of hair transplantation that we use at UK Hair Transplant Clinics. A FUE transplant sees healthy hair follicles being removed directly from your scalp. These healthy follicles are then grafted one-by-one into the areas of your scalp which require it. The follicles are implanted into the micro-incisions that have been made in the recipient area.
It is the more popular option that we offer and one that delivers great results time and again.
Why would I choose a FUE Transplant?
Though the basics of the FUE Transplant is similar to other hair transplant procedures (all procedures see us take hair from one area of the scalp to another) it is a popular option as it delivers more natural-looking results. The scars left by an FUE Transplant are microscopic, meaning that you can cut your hair far shorter after an FUE Transplant than you would with other methods.
It’s also less painful – and comes with a reduced recovery time. Healing time after an FUE Transplant is depends on your skin type, but the hair grafts take in a matter of days. The redness from the surgery settles within about a week and we advise patients to rest for a two week period. This two week period is vital as it is when the follicles will establish themselves in your scalp. Doing anything too strenuous will result in your follicles not taking and result in a poorer end result.
We offer expert aftercare to all of our patients. To get the best possible results from your surgery it is vital that you follow our aftercare program.
What does an FUE Transplant involve?
Unlike ‘strip’ transplants, where areas of skin are removed and grafted elsewhere, with FUE individual follicles are taken from healthy areas of the patients head. These follicles are then implanted individually into the areas where the original follicles are deficient.
These transplanted follicles are immune to the effects of DHT, the hormone that causes baldness. This is because we take these follicles from the ‘permanent zone’ on the back of the scalp. Once transplanted, this hair will go nowhere and you can be assured that you will get the results you are looking for.
How long does it take?
The length of your FUE transplant is dependent on the number of follicles needed to achieve the results you are looking for. The less follicles that need transporting to a new location on your scalp, the quicker the surgery.
A typical 2500 follicle FUE procedure takes around eight hours. It’s a long time, but we provide a meal during your procedure to ensure you are comfortable. The surgeries we operate in also have entertainment options available so you won’t be bored during the procedure.
In terms of the length of time for your procedure to reach your expectations, after 10 months there’s a 90% permanent ‘uptake’ (10% of hair follicles are always in a ‘resting’ phase so, as with seeds in your garden, some won’t ‘flourish’).
As part of your aftercare program we offer 6 and 12 month reviews. This is to ensure that your FUE Transplant is successful and to make sure you are as pleased as can be with your results.
Does it hurt?
Patients who’ve undergone the FUE procedure report that the procedure isn’t painful, although the length of time it takes means you do require a bit of patience!
If you are interested in proceeding with an FUE Transplant then you will need to meet with our consultants to assess your suitability for such a procedure.
At our clinics, the appointments are not with pushy sales people and it’s a no obligation consultation. The appointment takes between 30 and 40 minutes and at the consultation we perform all of the required tests explained above, discuss your personalised treatment plan and answer any questions you may have.
